Living Labs

Living Labs

Our Living Labs are place-based experiments in alternative education and development. Each Lab is rooted in a specific territory and its struggles, co-governed with local communities, and woven into AIBIA’s global network of students, researchers, and practitioners. Here, education, local economies, and everyday life come together as a shared space of experimentation.

Sierra Leone – Digital Futures from the Ground Up

Our Sierra Leone Living Lab has grown out of more than fifteen years of work in low-income communities, where access to technology is a daily struggle, not an abstraction. The Lab focuses on ICT literacy for teachers, young people, and the wider public, building community-run computer labs, training programs, and partnerships with schools and education authorities in districts like Bombali. The aim is simple and radical at once: to treat digital access and skills as a common good, co-created and co-governed with the people who need them most.

Italy (Molise) – Reimagining Inner Areas

Our Italy Living Lab is based in Roccavivara, in the rural inner areas of Molise. Here, we are slowly building an intentional educational community and future cooperative school that connects local life in a depopulating region with international students, scholars, and activists. The Lab hosts field schools, summer and winter programs, and collaborative projects that explore rural regeneration, autonomous economies, and prefigurative democracy—turning a small village into a living campus for reimagining how we live and learn together.
